The Evolution of Press Releases

The press release isn’t what it used to be and honestly, it probably never will be again. Moving into 2026 and beyond, it’s changing fast, and not in a neat, predictable way. What used to be a simple, formal announcement is now turning into something more flexible, more creative, and honestly a bit all over the place (in a good way).
For one thing, people don’t really want to read long blocks of text anymore. So press releases are starting to feel less like documents and more like content. You’ll see videos, short clips, maybe some graphics, even interactive stuff thrown in. It’s not just about saying something it’s about showing it in a way that actually catches attention.
Then there's AI, which is pretty much everywhere these days. Businesses use it to help them write press releases faster, change headlines, or even change the message based on who is reading it. So instead of one version for everyone, you might get slightly different versions depending on the audience. It’s efficient, but also a little strange when you think about it.
Another big shift is where press releases actually go. Before, it was all about journalists and media outlets. Now? Companies just post them directly on their websites, social media, wherever people already are. It cuts out the middleman, which is great for speed, but also means there’s a lot more noise to compete with.
At the same time, trust is kind of turning into a bigger problem now. People aren’t as quick to believe things anymore, so it’s not enough for a press release to just sound nice or polished. It actually has to feel real. Like, you need solid data, where it came from, some kind of proof to back it up otherwise people just won’t buy it. It matters way more now than it used to.
And of course, everything is tracked. Views, clicks, shares you name it. Companies are constantly checking what works and what doesn’t, then adjusting as they go.
So yeah, the press release isn’t dying. It’s just evolving, a bit messy, a bit experimental, but still very much alive.
